Roedd Syr William Reardon Smith (1856-1935) yn un o’r ffigyrau mwyaf blaenllaw yn ne Cymru ar ddechrau’r ugeinfed ganrif. Roedd yn enghraifft o ddyn a weithiodd ei ffordd o dlodi i gyfoeth – dechreuodd ar ei yrfa fel cogydd a chynorthwyydd ar long, cyn gwneud ei ffortiwn yn y diwydiant llongau pan oedd masnachu glo ar ei anterth yng Nghymru.
Sir William Reardon Smith (1856-1935) was one of the foremost figures in south Wales in the early twentieth century. His was a classic story of ‘rags to riches’ – starting life as a deck-hand and ship’s cook, he made a fortune in the shipping industry at the zenith of the Welsh coal trade.
